Disaster Management, Road safety |
Introduction Right to life and safety is a fundamental right of any citizen. This is guaranteed under the Indian Constitution. Anything which is hazardous to human beings and violates the right to life, such as road safety is covered under this Right. Road fatalities currently lead the list of accidental deaths in India, much more than any other accidental deaths like by drowning, fire, rail or air mishaps, etc. At the inquest of the world’s first road traffic death in 1896, the Coroner was reported to have said ‘this must never happen again’. More than a century later, 1.35 million people are killed on roads every year and up to 50 million more are injured. Without action the loss of lives on the roads is expected to be around 1.9 million each year by 2020. Road safety is an issue that does not receive anywhere near the attention it deserves. | Background and current scenario The Hard Facts

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) In September 2015 the United Nations launched the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development – the development framework that replaces and builds on the achievements of the Millennium Development Goals. Road safety was absent from the Millennium Development Goals but road safety targets have been integrated into the new 2030 Agenda. With the launch of the Sustainable Development Goals, road safety is receiving increased international attention, and is included in two of the 17 Goals of this new global agenda. |

Possible Interventions & expected outcomes Road Safety is critical issue with more than 1 reported fatality every three minute in India. Thus, there are many dimensions to the problem. Unfortunately, India does not have as many running initiatives or organizations and we too, are not huge to address all issues. We thus have focused only on behavioral aspect of driving training, which nobody is currently into and we believe, this is the most critical area which if addressed properly has the potential to significantly bring down casualties. We thus have designed initiative around RSDAS – which is Road Safety Driver Accreditation System – which actually trains drivers on why to drive safely, rather than how to drive. |
Description: RSDAS is an acronym for Road Safety Drivers Accreditation System. RSDAS believes safety resides in mind and drivers if given behavioral training, it will not only help reduce road fatalities but also improve their personal, social and family lives, indirectly also contributing to Road Safety. RSDAS believes, drivers need to be motivated to undertake training. Thus, pull should be created from people, individuals, and corporate recruiting drivers by way of hiring RSDAS certified drivers. Then they will automatically strive to improve their RSDAS Scores, undergo trainings, and lead a safer society. Safer him is safer us. RSDAS thus encourages people to employ RSDAS Certified drivers. | Outcome/Benefit:
