AFARM was born out of an acute need for an Apex Institution to co-ordinate efforts of Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) in their tasks of providing Drinking Water and Agricultural Extension services to villages in drought affected Maharashtra. It was one of the first organizations to operate as an Apex institution, in the country

Over five decades of engagement of AFARM in the development field, enabled AFARM to contribute to the designing, development & implementation of various rural development programs supported by State & Central Governments as well as the International agencies like World Bank, DFID, KFW, IFAD, ADB in the state.

Objectives

AFARMs approaches & strategies for the planning & implementation of watershed management are aimed

at following.

  • Promote and nurture community driven decision-making systems for water resources planning &
  • management;
  • Enhance the physical access of water on the farm and expand cultivable area under protective irrigation
  • through improved on-farm water use efficiency;
  • Achieve drinking water security for the population in project villages;

• Achieve soil moisture security for the rainfed crops.

• Reduce the risk of extreme climate events on agriculture production
